What you should do before planting a redbud tree

After choosing one type among different types of redbud trees, it’s time to start planting. The spot you choose for planting a redbud tree should provide your tree at least six hours of full sun exposure. You should know that most redbud varieties grow about 20 feet tall and 25 feet wide. So, chose a spot that provides the tree enough room to spread its branches out. Think about low rooflines and wires above your tree before planting. These moderate growers can reach about 10 feet in 5 to 6 years.

How to plant the eastern redbud tree

Dig a hole about 2 to 3 times as wide as the container your tree came in.

Don’t add anything to the hole. This planting practice is considered old-school and no longer recommended. Studies have shown that adding things like peat moss or potting soil to the hole may cause drainage problems and may even encourage the roots to stay in the hole and not to spread out into the surrounding soil. In the end, your tree has to grow in the native soil, so adding things to it doesn’t seem necessary.

In the next step of planting a redbud tree, you should gently tip the redbud tree out of the container (or remove the burlap since it doesn’t biodegrade quickly). Rough up the surface of the root ball using your hands, or snip any tree roots that are circling around it using a pruner. By doing so, you stimulate the roots to grow.

As the last step of planting a redbud tree, place your tree in the hole at the same height it was when in the container. Don’t plant too deep, and make sure the tree’s root flare, where the base widens slightly is above ground. Refill the hole with soil. Tamp down gently and water well.

How to care for redbud trees

For the first few years, water your plant deeply, especially during droughts. A new tree will need about 15 gallons of water a week. In fact, watering deeply and infrequently is much better than giving it a daily squirt that encourages roots to stay near the surface.

You can also add a layer of mulch (with 2 or 3-inch depth) around the base to hold moisture and prevent weeds. Remember not to place the mulch right up against the trunk, because it can lead to decay, pest, and disease.

It’s not necessary to prune your redbud tree, because it keeps its shape naturally. However, it’s good to trim off broken or crossing branches.
