What are organic mulches? And what are their advantages?
From ancient times the gardeners used mulch.
The benefits of using organic mulch include improving soil structure, improving soil moisture capacity and retention, protecting soil from erosion, adding nutrients and organic matter to soil, and controlling weeds.
They used forage, grass clippings, barley, and other easily decomposed materials to control weeds and keep moisture around the fruits, vegetables, and flowers of plants.
Today, the use of plastic mulches to obtain higher yield and early maturity of plants, especially for thermophilic species such as peppers, corn, tomatoes and ivy plants is increasing. Much research and advances have been made on mulch since the 1960s to make it easier to use, less expensive and more environmentally friendly. In the last 10 years, these advances have led to innovations in this field, including the technology of making plastics in agriculture, such as colored mulch.
Application of mulches
Mulch is used in agriculture, horticulture, soil protection, stabilization of quicksand and expansion of green space, in order to reduce evaporation and prevent moisture loss from the soil surface, optimize operations and increase the quantity and quality of the product. The use of mulch is now a commercial issue in all countries.
Types of mulch
There are different types of mulch, the choice of which should be based on the needs of each product or each region.
Mulches are classified into two types, organic and inorganic:
- Organic or biological mulches include natural materials such as dry grass, straw, straw, bark, chopped wood, leaves, sawdust and compost.
- Inorganic or chemical mulches are coatings made of plastic or polyethylene with a thickness of 0.9-2 mm that are spread on the soil.
